GNS3 success!

Posted in General Announcements on February 28, 2009 by Gerren

This past week was my first real attempt at getting GNS3 set up and configured correctly. I had installed it previously but could never seem to get an IOS image running correctly. I read a few things that people had recommended trying, but none of them worked.

I stumble across a post with some folks saying that certain IOS images weren’t running/didn’t run correctly for one reason or another. Ah ha! Could this be the problem? All of my previously attempts to get things running correctly were with the c2600-adventerprisek9-mz.124-23.bin image. I just grabbed it at random and didn’t think much about it at the time. After I downloaded and started using c3660-a3jk9s-mz.124-15.T8.bin, it worked like a charm!

Once I got the idlepc values figured out, I was off and routing in no time! Oh the geeky goodness that awaits.

Ran across this little gem the other day: Cisco Exam Retake

I’ll definitely be keeping that one tucked away…hopefully there will be no need to use it though!

Cisco IOS Tips and Tricks

Even thought I don’t have the chance to use the shortcuts and tips on a day to day basis, I’m sure they will come in handy for the CCIE. I ran across this link today and was pleasantly surprised at what I didn’t know!

My Journey Thus Far

Just a little history of where I started and where I’m hoping to go…

I was never the type that had to study when I was in school. So when I started to “study” for the CCNA back in late 2006, I thought I knew what I was doing. I didn’t have a ton of experience in Cisco networking, but enough that I was confident with a few weeks of prepping for the CCNA, I should be fine, right?

Big mistake. The CCNA was unlike any other test I’ve taken before and I paid the price for it. Attempt 1 – fail, attempt 2 – Hey! you still suck…fail! What the heck? I was ready to give up after that, but read some posts about people who were in the same boat. So, after some more rigorous studying, finally…3rd time was a charm. This was the first test that I had taken that you couldn’t really BS your way through! Blasphemy I say. Subnetting was the easy part for me…STP and NAT kicked my butt though. Once I had passed, I felt like I finally understood the Cisco tests and how to better prepare for them (aside from knowing the material inside and out).

So, here I am now…working on my CCNP. I passed the BCMSN exam on the first shot and am working on the BSCI currently. As twisted as it may be, it’s almost fun at this point.  I fee like I understand the material in much more detail for some reason. I’m sure that a big part of it was the TrainSignal.com training material. Clear, simple, and to the point. Chris Bryant doesn’t neccessarily teach “to the test” but you come out understanding the material which will help you more in the long run.

So, that’s the short story…eventually I hope to move on to the CCIE of course, but let’s take it one step at a time.

Thanks for stopping by Cisco Certified Hell. For those of you that have been down or are going down this path, I hope you find something useful on this site eventually. True, there are many Cisco certification blogs out there, but hopefully CCH has a bit more humor mixed in to keep you coming back. We all understand how stressful the certification process can be, so let’s have fun and learn while we go.

I started CCH for several reasons:

  • Helping me stay focused on the task at hand
  • As a way of documenting my progress
  • To help others gain knowledge/skills from other CCxx’s in the world
  • To have a laugh or two along the way

Here is my disclaimer: I am by no means a professional author, editor, or writer, so you as the reader, promise to overlook any dangling participles, misplaced modifiers, or any other bastardization of the English language that may appear in CCH. I’m writing to have fun and learn, not to perfect my use of the semicolon. I will however, make all efforts to be technically accurate when writing commands. Fair enough?

Aside from that, here’s looking forward to a fun and successful journey down the CCxx path!
Cheers!
